MEDIA RELEASE University of Wollongong LIBERAL CLUB
Friday, 13 January 2006:
ILLAWARRA LABOR TO BENEFIT FROM STUDENT ASSOCIATION? UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG LIBERAL CLUB President Brad Winton has expressed his disgust at a report that the Griffith University Student Representative Council plans to wind up their organisation and donate remaining funds to the ALP as a result of Voluntary Student Union which passed through the Senate last year. "Even it was technically possible under their constitution, which stipulates that the money can be donated to "a like-minded organization", I this is an obvious abuse of student funds. This money is from students for students and should be given back to students," he commented. "The recent report from within the University draws attention to the very behaviour that VSU was brought in to stop. Instead of engaging with the student community to rejuvenate and update the services that they offer on campuses in a more relevant and sustainable way, they are just flicking the money to the ALP," Mr Winton stated. "If one student union is considering this I have no doubt that others will too. I call on the President of the University of Wollongong SRC to rule out any donations to political parties and I also call on the Leader of the Federal Opposition to refuse to accept any money from Student Associations wound up by Young Labor hacks playing politics with student funds," Mr Winton concluded. |
