MEDIA RELEASE University of Wollongong LIBERAL CLUB Representative Report
Wednesday, 17 May 2006: WUSA Attacks our ANZACs UNIVERSITY of Wollongong Liberal Club Student Councillor Nathan Barton was astonished to read WUSA Media Coordinator Grant Coleman's criticisms of Australia's greatest legend, the ANZACs. "Less than 100 years, G rant Coleman proposes that we sweep ANZAC day under the carpet. One of the world's greatest leaders, Sir Winston Churchill so famously stated that 'if the British Empire and its Commonwealth lasts for thousand years, men will still say, this was their finest hour' and thus, I call upon Grant Coleman to apologise for these offensive words he has written and also call upon WUSA to provide funds for the construction of a memorial on university grounds honouring our heroes whom have fought for our country. "With each year more of those who fought die of old age and I believe it is of the utmost importance that all Australians continue to preserve the memory of our greatest legends and recognise their sacrifice." " I find it sickening that Grant could declare those who voted to end conscription as the 'Real Heroes' whilst saying 'Let Us Forget' about Our Boys." "The fact that this has been printed and distributed around the Illawarra region is disturbing to say the least, I believe that the least WUSA can do to make amends is to commit to the construction of a memorial honouring those who have fought." "Whilst I will strongly defend the right of freedom of speech, abusing the resources compulsorily acquired from students to attack our ANZACs is a poor reflection on the university community and thus should not be accepted as merely the words of a very left-wing individual, but as a strike at all Australians and their honour for the ANZACs." The Tertangala is the official publication of the Wollongong Undergraduate Student's Association (WUSA); it is distributed freely around the University and the Illawarra region. It is supposed to reflect the opinions and student populace, however its submissions from students have declined of late and it regularly runs articles in full from the 'Green-Left Weekly' to make up space.
