NSW Premier receives a 'grilling' during Illawarra Community Cabinet Meeting PDF Print E-mail

20th March, 2009:

A confrontation after the meeting

The University of Wollongong Liberal Club has again shown the wider Illawarra community Labor's position on political corruption within all levels of government.

Our position was substantiated when New South Wales Premier Nathan Rees was grilled by a university student at the recent (March 2009) Community Cabinet meeting at the university.

The student raised a question to the Premier during the public gathering: "Given the recent corruption of Labor Wollongong councils and the sacking of those councils, what are you prepared to do, Premier, to deal with the systemic corruption in the Labor party, particularly in the local level?"

The crowd went nuts, everyone clapped and cheered the question.

Premier Nathan Rees stumbled through an answer, responding by noting his implementation of "the ICAC report" and "controlling information and trying to be transparent." It was certainly not an adequate response, but in all respects, a GOOD QUESTION!

At the conclusion of the Community Cabinet forum, UOW Liberal Club members made further comment to the Premier before being confronted by the local Illawarra Labor member, Noreen Hay and one of her associates.

A comment was then made to UOW Liberal Club members: "corruption - what do you know about corruption?"

Given the recent Labor political scandals in the Illawarra, perhaps the comment has some substance.
