NSW Premier receives a 'grilling' during Illawarra Community Cabinet Meeting PDF Print E-mail

20th March, 2009:

A confrontation after the meeting

The University of Wollongong Liberal Club has again shown the wider Illawarra community Labor's position on political corruption within all levels of government.

Our position was substantiated when New South Wales Premier Nathan Rees was grilled by a university student at the recent (March 2009) Community Cabinet meeting at the university.

The student raised a question to the Premier during the public gathering: "Given the recent corruption of Labor Wollongong councils and the sacking of those councils, what are you prepared to do, Premier, to deal with the systemic corruption in the Labor party, particularly in the local level?"

The crowd went nuts, everyone clapped and cheered the question.

Premier Nathan Rees stumbled through an answer, responding by noting his implementation of "the ICAC report" and "controlling information and trying to be transparent." It was certainly not an adequate response, but in all respects, a GOOD QUESTION!

At the conclusion of the Community Cabinet forum, UOW Liberal Club members made further comment to the Premier before being confronted by the local Illawarra Labor member, Noreen Hay and one of her associates.

A comment was then made to UOW Liberal Club members: "corruption - what do you know about corruption?"

Given the recent Labor political scandals in the Illawarra, perhaps the comment has some substance.

We suggest regular visits to our website to keep in touch with the news and events of the UOW Liberal Club over 2009. The included RSS feeds are quite suitable for this purpose.

If you've missed our O-Week/Week-1 membership stalls, don't hesitate to use our 'Contact' link to get in touch with the club with regards to membership or other event enquires.

Liberals claim victory in student reform debate

University of Wollongong Liberal Club President and undergraduate member of the UOW Academic Senate Warren Hudson has hailed the recent review of student associations as a victory for student representation at the University of Wollongong.

In the recommendations made to the University Council, a new representative body based on Warren Hudson.s .Student Forum. proposal will be adopted, encompassing a wider range of student representatives on campus.

WUSA's stranglehold on student affairs has been broken, and they no longer have a monopoly on student representation at UOW.

0-Week & Week-1 Membership Surge - February 2007. PDF Print E-mail

February 2007:

0-Week & Week-1 Membership Surge

Membership of the UOW Liberal Club surged to new heights on 0-Week and Week-1, and was clearly the most popular political club on campus, signing up many times the the number of students then all of the others combined.

The Liberal Club lowered it's membership fees to only $2 for 2007, and sold more memberships then the Labor club could give away for free. Whilst the Liberal club was having a members BBQ, and actively signing up members, the Labor desk was abandoned due to lack of student interest, with a Labor club representative only coming over for the photo-op.

"UOW students clearly see the UOW Liberal Club as being the most active and relevant political club on campus, and this shows through our increase in members" stated UOW Liberal Club President Brad Winton.

UOW Liberals successfully lobby for better car parks on campus - January 2007. PDF Print E-mail

January 2007:

UOW Liberals successfully lobby for better car parks on campus

UOW Liberal Club Secretary and member of the Academic Senate; Warren Hudson successfully lobbied UOW management for improvements to the parking situation on campus. During peak periods, on-campus parking is in high demand, and many students end up circling the car parks for 20 minutes looking for a space to park. Warren Hudson met with university officials in late 2006 and put forward the case for real-time information as to where parking is currently available.

The new system, which is currently operational in the Western car park, provides real-time information as to how many spaces are currently available. It is hoped that through providing this information to students, that traffic congestion within the Western car park will be eased.
