2004 President's Annual Report PDF Print E-mail
The University of Wollongong Liberal club aims to provide the students of the University of Wollongong with a Liberal presence on campus, an opportunity to meet other students with similar ideals and ideas, the opportunity for students to debate and discuss their ideas with others and gain experience campaigning and dealing with various administrations at different levels. Over the previous year the club has been successful in this endeavor and much more is planned in the new year of 2005, with a large campaign to attract new members planned for the upcoming O-week and week 1.

This year's priority was to combat the lack of presence of the club on campus and the atmosphere of inactivity within the clubs membership, which has stagnated the club over the last few years. With the election of a new executive including James Hollman as president and Brad Winton as treasurer, the club has been partially turned around from a relatively quite club to a fully participating member of campus life.

One of the first tasks of the new executive was to redesign the clubs logo, giving the club a new image to reflect its desire to rejoin campus life. A number of sketches were proposed and well received among the liberal community on campus with a few being short-listed, finally the above logo was decided upon to represent the new face of the Liberal Club. It was planed that the logo would join a newly designed website but due to unavailable delays the new website still has not been completed.

A submission for funding has been approved for new T-shirts and it is planned that these will be ordered as part of the campaign in the New Year to attract new members. It should be noted that representatives of the club participated in campaigns with the young liberal flying squads in marginal seats for the federal election. Although no club funding was provided to support the representatives, the experience they gained has been valuable in adding to the dynamics of the club.

Combined with regular debates and meetings between members these events have had the effect of raising our profile on campus to the extent that we have received communications from non-members on campus requesting debate on topical issues. The latest of which was a discussion on the Iraq war, both the history behind the war and its aftermath.

It is my hope that we as a club can build on our achievements throughout the year to achieve great things in 2005.
